What Is Lip Blush?
Lip blush is a highly specialized cosmetic tattooing technique that enhances, tones, and improves lip color and shape. At Sculpted Studios, we specialize in several styles including blush, bold, ombre, and brightening (neutralization) treatments, each customized to your natural lip color, skin tone, and goal.
Because pigment is placed using a fine needle, the lips go through a healing cycle over the weeks following your appointment. Understanding this process before you visit our New York City studio means you’ll know what to expect at every stage instead of worrying.
Lip Blush Healing: Day-By-Day Breakdown
Bold Color + Swelling
Some swelling is to be expected and the color will be very bright compared to the final result. The color you see today is not your final result. Apply aftercare as directed, drink through a straw, and avoid hot or spicy food.
Matte Lipstick Look
May still have some mild swelling. The color looks extra bold, like a matte lipstick. Keep applying aftercare, sleep on a clean pillowcase, and avoid touching your lips.
Flaking, Peeling, Patchiness
Lips start to flake, peel, and look patchy. This can look scary, but it is completely normal. Do not pick, peel, or scratch. Pulling off skin that is not ready removes pigment and can cause scarring.
Color May Seem to Disappear
The color may look like it is disappearing entirely. This is also normal. The pigment is settling underneath new skin and will return. Patience here is key.
Lips Feel Better, Color Returns
Lips feel better and color starts to come back. External healing is nearly complete. You can resume wearing lip products.
Color Gets Stronger and More Even
Color gets stronger and more even week over week. Resume all normal activities and skincare. Avoid aggressive exfoliants near the lip area and apply SPF lip balm to protect the pigment.
Final Healed Color Visible
The color starts to settle and you will see your final healed result for the session. If additional sessions are needed, they can be scheduled from 10–14 weeks after this appointment.

Aftercare Rules: Follow Your Pre and Post Care, It is Not a Suggestion
What To Do
- Apply aftercare ointment (Aquaphor, Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, or artist-provided balm) consistently, keep lips moist at all times
- Clean lips gently with water and a fragrance-free cleanser on a cotton pad twice daily
- Sleep on a fresh, clean pillowcase
- Drink plenty of water, hydration directly aids healing speed and pigment retention
- Apply SPF lip balm after full healing to protect pigment from fading
Do NOT pick, peel, or scratch your lips, this removes pigment and can cause permanent scarring. Avoid swimming, saunas, or steamy showers on your face. No makeup on lips for 10–14 days. No spicy or heavily salted food for 48 hours. No intense exercise for 5–7 days. No kissing or smoking during healing. Avoid direct sun exposure. Skip Vaseline or petroleum jelly, it traps bacteria.
Important Things to Know
Melanin-rich lips: Clients with naturally deeper lip pigmentation may experience a period of increased pigmentation during healing. This is temporary and completely normal.
Cold sores: Clients who experience cold sores or carry the virus dormant in their body must take antiviral medication prescribed by a doctor before their appointment to lessen the chance of an outbreak or reduce its duration. Please discuss this with your artist at consultation.
Patience is key: Your lips will look different every single day while healing. That is normal. The final result from a session takes time to see fully, and multiple treatments, generally a minimum of two, are to be expected. Do not judge your result until at least 10–12 weeks have passed.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does lip blush take to heal?
Your lips heal on the outside in 5–7 days. Your final color shows around 10–12 weeks as the pigment moves through several transition phases. Multiple sessions are typically needed, the average is 2–3.
Is it normal for lip blush to look patchy while healing?
Yes. Patchiness, fading, and uneven color during healing is completely normal. The color can fade significantly and look spotty before it settles into your final result around weeks 8–14.
What does lip blush look like on day 3?
On day 3, your lips will begin flaking and peeling. The color will look patchy and uneven. This is normal and temporary, do not pick or peel.
Can I wear lipstick over healing lip blush?
No, do not apply any makeup, including lipstick or lip gloss, over healing lip blush for the first 10–14 days. Once fully healed, you can wear lipstick freely over your lip blush.
How many lip blush sessions will I need?
The average is 2–3 sessions depending on your natural starting color relative to your goal, body chemistry, and other factors. Additional sessions can be scheduled 10–14 weeks after the previous one. This spacing allows pigmentation to build properly over time.
Does lip blush peeling mean the color is gone?
No. Color disappearing during peeling is called “color ghosting”, a completely normal part of healing. The pigment is settling underneath the skin and will resurface by weeks 4–6.
